Review of Tomb Raider (2018) by Monika S — 18 Mar 2018
As a big fan of the recent Tomb Raider prequel video games Alicia Vikander was phenomenal as a young Lara Croft. More real and relatable for today's gen and a total badass with her share of cuts and bruises - to see this acclaimed dramatic actress pull off such physical grit showcases her strong versatility.
However the film underserved her and the game's story caliber (it spent a lot of time exploring the father-daughter relationship instead of more screen time better served on the core story - they hardly infuse the more exciting spirit of mythology, discovery, and learning that makes the game and even the first tomb raider film so enjoyable).
It did have some excellent inspired action scenes and combat. It was a decent effort but sad not enough it seems to truly re-ignite great potential and mass interest. I hope they take it next level if it gets a sequel - Alicia definitely deserves it and so does the franchise based on its latest takes.
