Review of Tomb Raider (2018) by Tanna J — 25 Mar 2018
In a genre dominated by men it's nice to know that strong women can be represented in the world of Archiological Mystery and Crime Fighting. But leave it to game makers to create a Bad-ass Barbie who still uses her over-sexed physique to get the job done. So when Hollywood came calling a decade ago it wasn't about ability to encompass a female version of Indiana Jones it was about who will pre-teen boys and gamers lust after that embodies the pixel-created Lara Croft? Jolie fit that mould perfectly.
But 10 years later the world is different...or at least trying to be. Girls can be whoever they want. Woman are tired of being objectified. The age of Mad Men is past. A new Lara Croft can be imagined and she doesn't have to be tits and ass to get the job done. Alicia has the smarts and the chops. I'm going in to compare her to Jolie. They are not the same. As far as I'm concerned this is a stand alone movie with a cast that gets it done (albeit predictably). If you're looking for fantasy fodder grab a magazine of an unrealistic figure, if you're looking for strong female character with grit then grab a ticket and enjoy the adventure.
