Review of Tomb Raider (2018) by Jacob B — 04 Apr 2018
Considering the bad reputation of video game movies, I was surprised by Tomb Raider. I have actually played some of the games so I did feel like certain things fitted in the games. This movie is an origin story for the character but it's based more off of the 2013 game.
I have only played the games from the second era. You know, the ones where Lara was trying to find out what happened to her mother? The action sequences actually do feel like something out of a Tomb Raider game.
The platforming elements, the bow-and-arrow and some tense moments actually feel like a quick time event. Naturally, since that's what the third era of games are built upon, the movie has Uncharted elements.
Alicia Vikander is actually a pretty good choice for Lara Croft, especially this one based off of the M-rated games. I have never seen the Angelina Jolie movies but she does look perfect for the choice of Croft as well since they both base themselves off of their attractiveness and resourcefulness at the same time.
Perhaps the braid and dual pistols at the end of the movie are a bit too much for the sake of fanservice. The sequel hook at the end for me was "...eeeeehhhh". I didn't think I would enjoy Tomb Raider as much as I did but here I am.
Maybe I should see more Alicia Vikander movies. The movie rises on the strength of her performance.
