Review of Tomb Raider (2018) by Dann M — 02 Dec 2018
A rather pathetic reboot, Tomb Raider is a convoluted and pointless action film that's just noise. Based on the 2013 relaunched video game, the story follows a social misanthrope named Lara Croft who refuses to accept her father's death and decides to go searching for him on a remote Japanese island after discovering that he went there in search of the mythical immortal Himiko; but soon she finds herself shipwrecked and captured by a group of mercenaries who are also searching for Himiko.
Alicia Vikander is no Angelina Jolie and doesn't have any screen presence or personality. And the special effects are really bad; the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb, making everything look fake.
Additionally, the myth of Himiko isn't very interested and the various traps and challenges are pretty rote. There are a couple of fun action scenes and bit of humor, but not enough. Tomb Raider is an incredibly disappointing film that's generic and boring.
