Review of Tomb Raider (2018) by Tony J — 07 Jul 2018
Here's the layout. Great lead actress, tone is more gritty and the action is relentless, sounds like a great film right? They should have just straight adapted the video reboot game, this is not a very interesting storyline.
The support cast is essentially wasted in thankless bit roles, the one true villain just overcome one dimensional writing, he comes off as a Marvel villain which is not a complement. Alicia Vikander embraces the central role and its a shame the film that the filmmakers crafted around her is so generic and dull.
The rebooted game franchise is incredible but like most video game to film transfers, producers and incorrect filmmakers swamp the film in needless action, the origin section is regrettably boring. Did they really need to have the bike action scene or the boat chase scene? Short answer is no.
Lara Croft could have been an anarchist and rebel, not an extreme sports wannabe, this just has that poor Daredevil style of filmmaking. This franchise gets off to a rocky beginning and lacks any camp quality to justify a revisit in the future, I think another reboot in ten years might be required.
