Review of Tom Jones (1963) by Giffy G — 03 Jun 2008
It is so rare that a quirky movie wins Best Picture that I found this movie delightful. I was amazed at how closely the scriptwriter stuck to the plot of the book (it is not 100% faithful to the book), while still making the 18th century story accessible to a 60s audience.
The editing and musical score were deligthful and innovative, the opening sequence done as a silent movie with intertitles tickled my fancy, and the decision to include the narrator in the voice over was a nice add-in for people who suffered through that horrible, horrible novel.
In fact, the only problems I have with the movie are problems I had with the book. I hoped they would have been wrinkled out in the movie, but to no avail.
