Review of Tom Jones (1963) by Brian S — 25 Sep 2010
Admittedly it stars to grow on me a little during the second half, but for the most part I just cannot stand this movie. Hugh Griffith is pretty amusing, but mostly the acting is cheesy and overdone (and not in a good way).
part Restoration comedy, part comedy of manners, the overall style really doesn't work for me. it's too crazy and disjointed and doesn't flow especially well. the characters aren't likable, the dialogue is almost entirely not funny, and all the fourth-wall-breaking is sloppy and out of place.
the occasional bright spot or clever moment makes it watchable at least, but this one really does not click for me.
