Review of Tokyo Sonata (2008) by Eric R — 12 Jul 2009
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's first true drama about a japanese family. The father in the household is laid off, yet he chooses to conceal this from his family. This film felt like a critique of the traditional family structure of japan in that we watch this father lose control of his life and through his frustration, he pushes his family to the edge.
The entire cast does a good job in this film. As usual for K.Kurosawa, the shot selections and camera work are truly top notch. He has such a unique visual style to his stories and his framing executes the story well.
