Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Sterling T — 18 Jan 2009
From the very opening shots which actually made me jump and feel uncomfortable, I haven't seen such invigorating cinema for a while. This goreaction flick really hits a lot of great notes. The television ads for the privitized police force to the cutesy commercials in a time and place where self-mutilation is fashionable - it reminds me how much I enjoyed the "Want to Know More" ads in Starship Troopers.
The set pieces and gore are consistently creative/over the top and it all moves at a clip that feels like a movie's worth of the first 10 minutes of Miike's Dead or Alive. This film is primed for a sequel (Tokyo Gore Army?) and I hope it ends up as equally propulsive as this movie.
I've been pretty disappointed with recent Japanese cinema and am glad that there's still life to be had in its industry.
