Review of Tokyo Gore Police (2008) by Elizabeth M — 04 Sep 2010
This movie is really, really off the wall. Something like Ichii by Miike is perfectly warped and perverse in its storytelling. This is warped in a bad mushrooms kind of way. But there are moments of real creativity and beauty within the gore. And gore there is. The funny thing is that it doesn?t take the gore seriously at all. That makes it perfectly cartoonish. The big bottle to the blood booster jets, it just goes with it. And that is the only way you can take this movie.
When it comes to trying to understand this, it doesn?t really happen. You can understand the overall arc, but the moments really just drop in and out of nowhere. Best to not think about anything when watching this movie. Or make a drinking game out of it and chug beer anytime blood is spraying. Not severed limbs or stabbings or such, when blood flows out of a wound like a fire hose. They must have need a lot of lens wipes for this one.
