Review of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) by Toby A — 20 Aug 2007
A nice heart-warming christmas tale about three bums caring for an abandoned baby and searching for it's parents. What's great about it is it's superbly executed storyline - every line every scene serves as part of the character's past and the plot of the baby's future.
It's all very sentimental - but yet deals with some of the really underground issues in Tokyo. The story threads wrap up beautifully and satisfyingly. the characters are endearing - despite thier faults and the last 10 mins is a nail biting finish.
Negatively - hard to find and english dub - so hard to access for some. It is about a minority group and they are not your usual protagonists - as such the film is difficult to get into at the start - you soon learn to love them.
overall - good animation - but nothing crazy cool, endearing, heart felt story and superb direction. Satoshi Kon is brill - Try Millenium Actress for true greatness.
