Review of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) by George F — 07 Mar 2004
I've seen a few Anime features (Metropolis for one), and they are generally long on visual excitement, but short on story and audience involvement. Tokyo Godfathers is a total departure as an Anime movie that would have been great even as a live-action story.
Here, the film makers eschew the normal Anime ambiguous, futuristic, rage-against-the-machine milieu for modern day Tokyo, with nary a robot or alien in sight. What it DOES have is characters and a story worthy of a major live-action movie. The story REALLY does stretch your belief in chance and coincidence, but it is a throughly HUMAN story.
This was a completely fascinating, enjoyable movie experience. If not for the all-too-convenient plot twists, this could have earned a Knight's 10. I could really learn to love Anime if more films like this make it off the drawing board!
Precise Knight Rating 8.8.
