Review of Tokyo Godfathers (2003) by Chris B — 11 Feb 2005
I?m still amazed that for the most part, anime is still regarded as ?kid stuff? by American audiences. For those who don?t realize otherwise, there are some really great movies you are missing. Such is the case in this wonderful little film I finally got around to seeing.
It?s Christmas Eve, and three homeless friends stumble across an abandoned baby. At first, one of them wants to keep it. But the others insist on taking it to the police. But pretty soon, the three sort of settle on the idea of finding the baby?s parents, and returning it to them.
This leads them into a long and enjoyable journey through the streets of Tokyo. But this isn?t going to be a simple walk in the park. These three must face all sorts of crazy characters and narrow escapes before their journey ends.
I really liked how this movie was more than just a movie about reuniting a baby with it?s parents. We also get to see these three homeless people reunite with family as well. And we get to see more sides to their characters than you would have expected.
And just as the movie seems to be over, a great little twist comes in at the end that pushes the story further into more fun. This is one of the best anime?s I have ever seen. I?m glad that I finally got around to seeing this little gem. Tokyo Godfathers shouldn?t be missed!.
