Review of Tokyo Drifter (1966) by Justin D — 15 Jun 2007
Day glow snowfalls and a singing hero, only the mind of Suzuki could of produced this madness. A yakuza goes on the run around Japan in the hope of avenging his clan destruction. It's all about the wallpaper here, but what colours and what scenes! The final confrontation sees the entire set filled with different washes of primary colours to reflect who is running and losing, and the mood of the characters.
It all creates a bizarre reality unlike anything else you've seen before. Cinema at its most expressive and as a result some might argue it's less of a film and more of a moving painting, but without expressionists like this films like Kill Bill would never have existed.
