Review of Tokyo Drifter (1966) by Robert T — 18 Dec 2007
This movie just reeks of cool. suzuki had the incredible ability to take a b-movie and really make it into something. the art direction, mis en scene and blocking, brilliant use of color (the last scene in all white is amazing), creative use of the zoom lens, and just pure style carries this movie beyond the rather silly yakuza plot and into something spectacular.
melville would go on to do the same thing for the french with le samourai, and both movies are by far some of the coolest from the 1960s.
