Review of To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) by Jacob G — 29 Mar 2008
It's hard to write about this film without the obvious comparisons to Priscilla Queen of the Desert; or the backlash in the gay community when Hollywood hired three alpha male celebs to play drag queens. Since everyone wants to mention these two things, I will say one thing on both topics: the only thing it has in common with Priscilla is the number three, the gay thing and the road trip theme. The rest is pretty different. And as far as hiring straights to play gays goes: it happens all the time (even in Priscilla Queen of the Desert): it's called casting the best actor for the part AND marketing. Big deal.
I actually really like this movie. It hits a couple of speed bumps and it isn't as good as the other gay road trip flick mentioned, but all the actors (not just the three leads but all the wonderful character actors like Beth Grant and Melinda Dillon) do beautiful jobs in their roles. Especially Blythe Danner and Stockard Channing.
And I have never wanted to be a woman or dress like a woman --.
But if I had the dresses Swayze wears, I would do it.
It's fun and it's heartwarming and it's worth a look.
