Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Matthew F. J — 25 Mar 2013
I never though Terrence Malick could direct something boring & yet this has come to be true with his laborious & uninspired last film To the Wonder. Iam a huge fan of his work, Thin Red Line is my favourite film of all time I think, The New World was incredible, I saw it 3times at the movies, Days of Heaven I have seen countless times & Badland is as well one of my favourite all time film.
That leads us to his last two films. Already pretty arty & quite stretched was his Palme d'Or: Tree of life, good film, interesting but somehow a little too full of itself, like hey guys i'm the smat guy showing you what life & it's origins are because until nw you were too dumb to understand. right ok dude you a very smart man but chill cuz this time you went AWOLL! Sure you a professor of Philosophy, sure you have directed some of the best films ever but now just stop this poetic stuff because you have reach your own limits in the process.
To the wonder is a still born enterprise, trying to show the failing relationship of a man & a woman through 2 hours of a long joke of a film. His characters are cut off from the real wordl it's hard t relate to them, no one is speaking clearly, the voice over is actually pretty disturbing & vacuous, what's this love that loves us? hum yeah sure have you ever encountered anyone thinking or evnen acting like that?
Malick previous film were all happening in the past, the past allows that sort of reflection, because we are taking the time to reflect on it, but for a story being set in nowodays world, i'm sory it feels completely ridiculous & totally out f place.
I'm the first one to be really sad about this film, I wanted to love it but unfortunately I felt so bored I couldn't believe it.
Now maybe Terry should stick to his usual 5to 10years time gap between pictures because this one is completely wasted, provoking boredom, miles & wonder..... Why to the wonder? why this ilm? What did you want to say? did you try to show? all it remains is ... Wonder.
