Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Jonathan B — 10 Apr 2013
After seeing this at TIFF many months ago, I wasn't sure exactly how to base my impressions, yet after thinking about it, I have concluded my thoughts. As a big fan of Terrence Malick, it hurts me to say this is by far his weakest film.
While the imagery is definitely top notch and as beautiful than ever (as the cinematography is in all his films), the film overall lacks the poetic wisdom that his other films carried and instead delivers a muddled experimental narrative that feels too distant and not at all moving for a film themed around love.
While moments of it remind you of Malick's genius, others make you worry.
