Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Francisco B — 18 Apr 2013
This film is an expose of the human soul and the emotions that create it. It is a film of artistry that speaks much deeper than I've ever experienced. It amazes me how well Malick is able to capture the human soul in its wandering and its longing.
It is not a movie to be entertained by but a changing canvas that we are to use as a way to search our own depth. We are called to conjure up the meanings to the events. There is little to nothing left clear in the 2 hours.
It is that which captures my attnetion the most as a film that hold true to the struggle and joy in relationship. It is not for everyone and it is important to be ready for such a film to take in the depth that it is trying to impart.
It is even deeper than Malick's Tree of Life but along the same line of artistry. He reveals parts of himself that are incredibly intimate. Malick is at the top of my list for directing that appeals to the heart and to our humanity.
This is incredibly rare and he knows it but I'm glad it doesn't stop him for making such films. If you are going to watch it, be prepared to be challenged.
