Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Nancy H — 23 Apr 2013
While "The Tree of Life" was a fascinating portrait on a family and the universe in relation to each other, and done terrifically with Malick's disjointed yet fluid filmmaking, "To the Wonder" is a lazy attempt at the same thing.
The substance we're supposed to feel is either completely missed or just not even thought through, as if Malick shot a bunch of things without any real clear direction in mind. I admire his camerawork and style so much but I felt bored and mis-directed through this film and wanted to feel the essence and emotion naturally, like "The Tree of Life," but it never came.
