Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Hugo G — 26 Apr 2013
Probably Malick's weakest film of his 6. But even his weakest is better than many Director's best. To The Wonder is extremely thin in terms of story and dialog. It's a poetic visual mood piece even more so than The Tree of Life or his other films.
It's a long 2 hours. While there is some great cinematography, even that element feels lesser than the other 5 of his works. I'm sure I'll grow to appreciate the details in this one over the next year or two now that I've gotten past the always exceedingly high expectations that come with a first viewing of any Malick film.
But I can't help anticipate his next movie even more now that this was more like a long experimental short film shy on meaning, or at least meaning I could wrap my head and heart around.
