Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Simon G — 27 Apr 2013
Doesn't quite reach the artistic heights of 2011's Tree of Life but nevertheless To the Wonder is another film of rare beauty; Malick again opting for sun (or rain) drenched visuals over dialogue or narrative structure despite everything unfolding chronologically.
Both Affleck (with hardly any dialogue and possibly a career best) Kurylenko give absorbing performances as a couple trying to hold onto their romance after the flame has died. And Malick doesn't pull any punches; the onscreen romance (credit to the two leads) reaches the highest of highs and the lowest of lows (and even gets a little sexy here and there - something new for Malick), all done with innate beauty and grace, as one would expect from a Terrence Malick project.
