Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Rob W — 16 May 2013
If only Bardem's story was the full movie, maybe we'd have something here instead of this film-school crap. C'mon Malick, you're not Woody Allen, you've made six films, you don't have enough time for fluff like this doodling.
It's not even pretentious. It's just a flmmaker futzing about who KNOWS what he's doing, and his DP KNOWS how to shoot a film, and his actors can act (well, maybe, I'm not sure about Kurylenko still between this, Quantum of Solace and Oblivion).
And yet, does he know what he's doing here? I haven't felt this disengaged and yet bizarrely intrigued by a directorial disaster on such a small scale since Godard's... um... HailMaryNouvellevagueInPraiseofLoveFilmSocialisme.
