Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Zaenal A — 15 Jun 2013
Like all of Malick's films since his return to cinema (with the Thin Red Line) To the Wonder could be a lot leaner. But like all of his films since his return To The Wonder has the same spiritualism.
It's poetic and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki makes anything and everything look gorgeous. But...To the Wonder just feel empty and lacks the soul of Malick's previous work. It's not a bad movie but there's just an emptiness to it that you can even see in the vast locations.
Wonderfully crafted but like a vase it is hollow. It just all leads to nowhere with no revelation. It's like a journey to nowhere but a pleasant journey nonetheless with wonderful views.
