Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Wayne M — 04 Jul 2013
Terrence Malick is a singular film maker. His films are like no other. To The Wonder is probably his least impressive work, but yet it is still a cinematic experience. This modern love story was filmed without a script and it shows.
It is more about visuals and emotions rather than dialogue. The actors drift on and off screen, often with voice over to show their thoughts. A man and a woman meet and fall in love in France, before relocating to Oklahoma.
Their union soon turns sour and the woman returns. Only to return again to ignite the flame. But the plot here is nearly irrelevant. This is about feelings and emotions, thoughts and ideas. Sometimes this is frustrating as it would be have been desirable to hear a chunk of dialogue.
But what this film worthwhile are the stunning poetic visuals. This is ethereal cinema. Certainly not for everyone, but rewarding if you go along for the ride.
