Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Livia A — 19 Sep 2013
Realistically, this movie is only going to communicate with people who share some emotional space with it. It is an artful, delicate and impressionistic montage of the voyage of love. Delectable tableaux of natural and urban beauty that ballet with scenes of domesticity, all threaded through with deep reflections on the nature and wonder of love.
A trajectory through romantic love, curdling through contempt, and the desperate hope of salvaging something greater from that ruin, the true, unchangeable love behind the transient, the love that loves.
When the priest consoles a cancer ridden mother, I simply lost it. Finding the faith to offer God's love in such darkness, the haunting, endless thirst to re-experience his sacred joy in a world of such tormented pain.
This movie has some flabbiness, but it is churlish to alight on it in the presence of such beauty and truth. Five stars, no hesitation.
