Review of To the Wonder (2013) by Matthew C — 01 Jan 2015
Terrence Malick always captivates and moves. It's just a matter of degrees. To the Wonder is the lesser Tree of Life. Affleck's character is broken in one way and Malick explores it through a lens that is constantly sweeping over fields and lurking through hallways.
Both Olga and Rachel are fantastic in portraying women swept up by empty promises. Javier gives a heartfelt performance and for a while we think that he will play a big part. Mainly he's voice over of caution and prayer.
Besides Malick's usual drifting scenes, intimate mistakes and artistic whispering, this film is for certain people but the themes are fit all. If you like him, watch it, if you're new to this maybe start somewhere else.
You have to be in a mood or be an indie filmmaker.
