Review of To Sir, with Love (1967) by Jennifer A — 22 Aug 2007
It's dated & cheesy but still fairly enertaining......
To Sir, With Love (1967) - 6.2/10.
Director - James Clavell.
Starring - Sidney Poitier, Judy Geeson, Christian Roberts, Lulu, Suzy Kendall.
One of the most influential "inspirational teacher" stories ever made. Set in England during the 1960's, Poitier stars as Mr. Thackery, an American engineer who "temporarily" accepts a teaching position at a High School full of unruly students. Watch Poitier as he attempts to transform these young hoodlums into productive members of society!
Watching this film today, one can't help but laugh at the seemingly tame (by today's standards) students Poitier helps to transform. Heck even in that period they don't seem so bad. Had this been in America you would have had Vietnam, drugs, civil rights, etc as a potential "influence" on the students, but he this is England. Anyway I did find charm in Poitier's character and a certain amount of novelty in "60's youth" which made this movie watchable. And for better or worse it spawned a huge hit in Lulu's title track. But it's mostly cheesy fun. BTW did these kids ever change clothes? They are wearing the same thing almost everyday in class!
