Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by Karen G — 17 Sep 2012
Woody's latest leg on his European tour is a mish-mash of four stories, each strong on farce or fantasy, but not actually very strong. Roberto Benigni is likeable as a discontented everyman who suddenly achieves celebrity status for no reason, and Penelope Cruz is absolutely stunning as a high-class call girl, but neither role offers much, other than Cruz's red dress.
Highlight for me was the always-brilliant Alec Baldwin in a role reminiscent of the Humphrey Bogart character in Play It Again, Sam, who haunts and critiques Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page's burgeoning illicit romance, although this thread was really no more impressive than the other three.
As so often in recent Allen movies, many of the actors are unconvincing in their roles, which are little more than ciphers to illustrate a point. Woody himself returns to the screen in this one, in a somewhat underwhelming role, although he does elicit a couple of laughs with his gloomy barbs.
