Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by Cailin T — 11 Jan 2013
Everyone (with half a brain) knows that Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) movies aren't exactly boundary-pushing or, really, that entertaining. They usually revolve around bizarre relationships in European locales.
This movie is no different, but it doesn't feel as pompous as his last two flicks. It certainly helps that the majority of his cast is likable. Having the likes of Jesse Eisenberg (Rio), Ellen Page (Super), Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), and a host of Italian actors like Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful) around doesn't hurt.
Yeah, they all (at least, the Americans) play the role of high society snobs and Penelope Cruz (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) was typecast, but I didn't hate any of them. The stories were about as random as you would expect, and the flick was about as deep as a puddle, but you never feel like your intelligence is being insulted.
There are probably better ways to spend an evening, but for an in-flight movie, there were worse selections.
