Review of To Rome with Love (2012) by Nate A — 30 Jan 2013
So, this is kind of obvious that Woody Allen just wanted a holiday in Rome. None of these stories are even close to being strong enough to stand on their own. Only one of them really succeeds, two others are so-so, and the last is a bizarre failure.
Still, the movie is pretty charming, even when it's baffling and the beautiful setting of Rome certainly doesn't hurt things. It's a shame the Benigni storyline was so bad. I'd have liked him to rekindle a little of the success he had from the past.
It seems that 'Midnight in Paris' may have been lightning in a bottle that Allen was able to capture in the twilight of his career. Still, I didn't loathe or get bored with any of the characters, so it's not like some of his other recent films.
