Review of To Return (1982) by J H — 14 Sep 2009
Brilliant!
An amazing story with amazing actors, it can only lead to one of the best films of 2006!
I loved everything about this, from the realistic reactions of the characters to the lack of sentimentalism over whether everything that happened was just or unjust, legal or illegal - events unfurled and the story unfolded in a realistic way without the heavy handed moralizing often present in Hollywood movies. One example which springs immediately to mind is when they are burying the freezer with the body of her husband. The daughter simply states "I'm glad you buried him here, he loved it here" [sic].
Cruz is stunning in the lead role seemed to posses a more natural and earthy sense of her true spirit when acting in her mother tongue.
Volver is a masterpiece and deserves to be watched several times in order to appreciate the wonderful script, nuances and facial expressions. Watch this film!!
