Review of To Return (1982) by David S — 21 Feb 2011
For a movie not in English, it ties you to its story right from the start leaving you feeling Spanish, and sympathising with the onscreen story. Inspiring acting by all involved and a tragic storyline that flows along into its fairytale ending. I really wouldn't ever want to see 'Volver' again because it made me feel so empty and despairing of hope in the human race. Where lies are told more often than the truth, and sin reigns so strongly over a family, it's hard to find redemptive qualities.
However, the contrast of showing the reaping punishment from sin sown, the pain suffered from a life of unforgiveness, and the joy experienced when things are made right and time is spent to work through the history of hurt is a powerful lesson of life.
