Wow, Lauren Bacall. At only 19 years of age and giving such a solid performance in this classic Howard Hawks film. It's typical Bogart, smoking cigarettes and being as cynical as ever. The reason this movie works is the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall, which eventually led to their marriage.
