Review of To Have and Have Not (1945) by Prescott B — 12 May 2008
This film was Betty Persky's first film, aka Lauren Bacall, and the film where Bogart and Bacall instantly fell in love. It made her a star instantly and it is easy to understand why. She dominates the screen.
Interestingly enough, Howard Hawks was extremely jealous that Bacall fell in love with Bogart and not him since he was making her a star so he slept with two other actresses in the cast during shooting.
The inspiration for this film came from Hawks making a bet with Hemingway that he could make a great movie out of Hemingway's worst material, Hawks was an egomaniac. Some of the script seems conventional but you have to remember that the government told hollywood what they could and couldn't make back then if it dealt with politics and FDR didn't like the original version so hey had to change it.
