Review of To Have and Have Not (1945) by James R — 09 Apr 2009
The film work wasn't bad, just nothing really clicked in it for me. Humphrey Bogart seems bored, while the lead lady is just boring. I think the problem is just the half-assed story, which Hemingway himself admitted to as being "junk," saying it was his least favorite novel.
The adaptation is probably just as bad if not worse. I'm not sure why we had to hear Lauren Bacall belt out so much song, they even joked at her horrible voice. When Bogart finally breaks out some action in the end it's pretty awesome, and there are plenty of good lines and nice sets.
I didn't understand they are in a French colony, I thought they were in France, so I was pretty confused by the politics they kept mentioning.
