Review of To Have and Have Not (1945) by Fazley A — 04 Mar 2011
I'm never going to be a big fan of classic movies. Anything from before the 1990s has to be a stand-out in at least a number of areas for me to enjoy it. "12 Angry Men" is one strong example of this, as is "Rear Window".
"To Have And Have Not" is not a stand-out. I understand what made Humphrey Bogart a legend in movies, and why Lauren Bacall became a sex-symbol of the post WWII era, but this doesn't have the catchy and edgy script of a Hitchcock, or the brilliant acting work of a Lumet.
Perhaps its just not my era (not at all!), but I continue to be disappointed by legendary movies of old.
