Review of To Have and Have Not (1945) by Hayley D — 12 Jul 2009
Howard Hawke's adaptation of Hemingway's story about an American who unwillingly becomes embroiled in gang wars in the Isle of Martinique is really all about the star power. Humphrey Bogart is unfailing in his ability to make even the most humdrum actions and dialogue mesmerizing, and he makes a spicy duo with the sexy Lauren Bacall.
Not to be forgotten is Walter Brennan's comic turn as Bogart's perpetually inebriated friend.
