Review of To Die For (1995) by John A — 05 Jun 2007
A hilarious and, at the same time, blood-chilling, mockumentary that chronicles the journey of a delusional small-town woman to rise above being a local weather girl to become a famous television personality.
The stunning Nicole Kidman, as Suzanne Stone, delivers one of her earliest best performances that has garnered her a deserving Golden Globe award for Best Actress. She has her bitchy and icy-cold persona in very sharp spades and succeeds in creating a hilarious and very scary cold-hearted character, manipulating her way to garner fame.
Gus Van Sant creates a cold and miasmatic atmosphere with his direction, with many sprinkles of odd and nonetheless very dark humor, and great sharp dialogue delivered with perfect comic timing. But this is really an unflinching character study.
We continually look because we are fascinated by the depravity of one's individual to go to greater lengths to pursue her dreams. Fascinating, scary and hilarious: a cerebral dark comedy that prompts one to take a very cold shower afterwards.
Great ending, too. Icy cold, indeed.
