Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Arrin S — 12 Jun 2012
Total snooze fest, couldn't even make it through the film. The dialogue is just plain horrible. It seems as if the actors are just reading off the paper and there are just too many poorly timed witty lines and comebacks.
It gets to the point where the zingers are too calculated and neither of the lead actors has any type of sense of timing with their deliveries and are practically running over each otherâ(TM)s lines.
Whoever said Cary Grant could act certainly wasn't talking about this film. Grant does a lot of corny, unnatural, over the top acting. After the first time he kisses Grace Kelly, he gives this awe shucks smile into the camera that made me want to throw up.
Grace Kelly is a true beauty but once again, her delivery on some of those lines was flat as a board. I guess this film was made during an era in cinema where acting was more theatrical rather than realistic so I was willing to put up with the theatrics for a while.
However, the story/plot move at a snail's pace and never seems to pay off.
