Review of To Catch a Thief (1955) by Moe J — 17 Aug 2011
I love this movie, even after about 50 watches! It has so many great things. It's witty, suspenseful, romantic, ahead of its time, and it has a great plot. John Robie (Grant) used to be a jewel thief, but retired years and years ago.
Of course, considering this is a romantic thriller, jewel thefts start up. The robberies are looking just like him, but he didn't do it, and of course, he has to prove that he's innocent. Along the way he meets Frances (Kelly), who at first is skeptical, but once she falls for John, she does everything she can to help him out.
Though uber popular when it came out, today it seems "To Catch a Thief" is forgotten and it's all "Psycho" 's fault!! Though this of course, isn't in the same rank as the latter, this is a very good Hitchcock movie that is truly a lot different from many of his films.
Most of his movies were just suspenseful thrillers, plain and simple, but this one combines those genres with comedy and romance, and then you add the VistaVision color, and you get a movie as pretty as half the rom-com's popular at the time.
The end result is just perfect, and you end up with a movie that is not only entertaining, but is very well made, from the acting all the way to the score. There's not one minute in this film that isn't worth your time.
"To Catch a Thief" is a very enjoyable suspenseful romantic comedy thriller (haha) that really has aged well. Recommended.
