Review of To Be or Not to Be (1998) by Darryl J — 31 Aug 2008
A brilliant and clever satire about WW2. This is my first Ernest Lubitsch film and I loved it. Color Me Impressed. I respect this film so much because this was actually going on at the exact same time as they were making this movie.
It's all handled so well. It's consistently funny but there is always a deeper undercurrent in this. They don't try to make it seem like the war is some big joke. There are several scenes that could fit in any great WW2 drama.
The entire cast were all genuinely funny and likable. I loved Jack Benny and Carole Lombard in this. Everyone had so much chemistry. The flawless script probably helped with that. I can't stress that enough.
It's endlessly witty and funny.
