Review of To Be or Not to Be (1998) by Jacob R — 27 Feb 2010
Arguably Lubitsch's best, elements of which have been lifted or appropriated in numerous films ever since. The satire here is twofold: to ridicule the Nazis (Spike Jones' Der Fuehrer's Face released the same year) as well as the fishbowl hubris of actors who, regardless of the straits, think only of themselves.
This is fearless comedy.
