Review of To Be or Not to Be (1942) by Luc L — 01 Apr 2011
For my money, Ernst Lubitsch is up there with Preston Sturges as the two greatest comedic directors of their era, and "The Lubitsch Touch" is on full display as he makes nazis funny decades before Hogan and his Heroes, turns Jack Benny into a grade-A comedic leading man, and shows why not even Mel Brooks can handle hold a candle to him when it comes to using a spoonful of sugar to help some darkly acerbic humor go down with an ear-to-ear grin (for the record, Brooks remake was pretty .
...well.... blah).
