Review of To Be or Not to Be (1942) by Steve S — 07 Aug 2011
An unparalleled masterpiece. The Lubitsch/Benny collaboration to end all Lubitsch/Benny collaborations. I only find myself too often of an evening crying myself to sleep because this is the only one. It would seem natural for the two people with the greatest understanding (and the most useful emplyment) of comedy to come together and make sweet music, however it only happened once.
But thank god we have the one. It's certainly the most well crafted comedy, the best Lubitsch around, and the majesterial presence of Benny is enough to launch it into the realm of unsurpassable greatness.
