Review of To Be and to Have (2002) by Chris D — 06 Nov 2007
Just about the perfect documentary of its type. Fascinating and unobtrusively political. Beautifully shot, superbly managed and quite astonishingly well edited. The way it handles time, the way its narrative force derives almost entirely from the interactions between people, the way it appears to have learned from its subject, just as we do, to guide and be guided, the way it pivots around the only scene in the film where the film-maker is an active participant - it's completely captivating, I absolutely loved it :-).
