Review of To Be and to Have (2002) by Frances C — 04 Jun 2008
Extraordinary. From a technical point of view, I loved how this utterly went against the commonly received wisdom that you can't stick with one camera angle for the whole of a sequence and keep your audience's attention.
There's no conflict, no tension, no 3 acts, no 22 steps, no nonsense. Just a beautifully filmed glimpse of French rural life. Love the boy doing long multiplication whose entire family tries to help him puzzle it out!
