Review of Titus (1999) by Sameer K — 30 May 2008
I am still not quite sure what to do with this film. First off, I very much enjoyed it, which is odd, because I have a general revulsion to Shakespeare. I suppose what made this so gripping and enticing is the combination of the presentation of the dialouge and Taymor's artistic take on the film. I am astounded that they presented the play, albeit a modern adaptation, in a distinctly un-Shakespearen manner. What I mean is, it didn't seem like the puffed-up Shakespeare that is so often seen and thought off in accordance with his plays. It allowed for the amazing story to be told without seeming pompous and pretentious.
However, the movie is not without its faults. For instance, there are random "dream" sequences or something of that nature that only interrupt the flow of the film and, more often than not, make ruins the serious tone set forth. Another related item, there are random moments either intended to be humorous or that come off hokey, and therefore, humorous. These also interrupt the flow and ruin the tone of the movie.
But, hey, we have a vengeful Anthony Hopkins. What more could you want?
