Review of Titus (1999) by Elena V — 16 Jan 2008
I am not a big fan of Shakespeare - and that is an understatement. I never did like having to decipher his works in school. I knew this was a Shakespeare work, but I did not know the script was straight from the play until I starte watching it.
I almost stopped watching it, as I was expecting an extremely boring 3 hours. I was mistaken though - my respect for Shakespeare has increased after seeing this. There are few who could write this way about the basest of human nature like him.
This was a sordid, and at many times gruesome account of the general Titus Andronicus, and the story is full of intrigues, revenge, betrayal, and plots within plots. One of the most unique stories I have ever seen! The cinematography was terrific as well.
There was some bad content that was unfortunate, or I would have kept this movie for my collection. The acting was superb, especially by Anthony Hopkins - but that was expected, he is quite frankly, a legend! Blending new and old technology achieved a very interesting effect, as well.
The plot was much easier to understand than I would have expected, given the way the film was set out. This was a tragedy through and through, but leaves you wanting more.
