Review of Titus (1999) by Fiona N — 08 Mar 2009
Though dark and disturbing, with disparate juxtapositions in time and place that put the viewer off kilter, this film is masterfully wrought. Artistic but wrenching depictions illustrate the horrific cruelty begotten as revenge-begets-revenge-begets-revenge.
Hopkins is top notch; one cannot tell if his "Titus" is truly insane, or just insane enough to convince everyone as he plots his ultimate revenge. Director Julie Taymor is phenomenally brilliant!
